John J. Walsh IV, MD, serves as department chair and is a clinical professor of orthopedic surgery at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. He joined the faculty in 1999 after completing a hand surgery fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He previously served as clinic director and staff orthopedic surgeon at Moncrief Army Community Hospital at Fort Jackson in Columbia, South Carolina.

Dr. Walsh received his bachelor's degree in biology at the University of Delaware in Newark. He received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and completed an orthopedic surgery residency and a transitional internship at Dwight David Eisenhower Army Medical Center at Fort Gordon, Georgia. He is board certified in orthopedic surgery with a certificate of added qualification in surgery of the hand.

Dr. Walsh has lectured internationally on a broad range of general orthopedic and upper extremity surgical conditions. He is a member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand and the Christian Medical Society. His primary interests are hand and upper extremity surgery, joint replacement of the shoulder and elbow, and reconstructive osteotomies for bone deformity. He is also interested in reconstruction for brachial plexus injuries.
