Helmut Albrecht, MD, serves as Chair of the Palmetto Health-USC Medical Group Department of Medicine and also leads the USC School of Medicine academic Department of Internal Medicine. He received his medical degree from the University of Hamburg, Germany, and completed residencies at the University of Hamburg and Emory University in Atlanta. Albrecht completed a fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of Hamburg and a fellowship in infectious diseases at Emory University.
Albrecht has previously served as Chief of Medicine for Palmetto Health Richland and as secretary, vice chief and chief of staff. He is the current Heyward Gibbes Distinguished Professor of Internal Medicine and holds an appointment as chief, USC Infectious Diseases Division.
Dr. Albrecht has considerable study experience as investigator, principal or coordinating investigator of multiple national and international trials. He serves as a reviewer for AIDS, Clinical Investigator, CID, JID, and Annuals of Internal Medicine, JAMA, EID, and other journals. He has published more than 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals and several book chapters.
