Committed to research and education
At Palmetto Health-USC Orthopedic Center, we have a strong focus on community outreach, research, education and growth opportunities to meet the needs of our growing patient population.
We are dedicated to academic research and our residents, faculty and attending physicians have authored publications and presentations at state, national and international levels. Our primary goal for our ongoing research studies is to provide evidence-based information to improve and advance the care of our patients and orthopedic patients nationally.
Palmetto Health-USC Orthopedic Center and the USC School of Medicine Orthopedic Surgery Department offer abundant opportunities for research, with the primary goal of improving the care of our patients and contributing to the advancement of orthopedic medicine. Our attending physicians and orthopedic surgery residents participate in research initiatives and complete multiple research projects annually, including grant-funded projects.
With over fifty active research studies, Palmetto Health-USC Orthopedic Center continues to promote excellence in research endeavors, which is evident in the many state, national, and international publications and presentations by our faculty physicians and residents.

Palmetto Health and the University of South Carolina School of Medicine now offer three fully accredited five-year orthopedic surgery residency positions in collaboration with the Palmetto Health-USC Orthopedic Center in Columbia, South Carolina. Orthopedic rotations are supervised by 22 full-time faculty in each of eight major subspecialties: orthopedic trauma; pediatric orthopedics; upper extremity; sports medicine; spine; adult reconstruction; foot and ankle; and general orthopedics.
Our residency program is committed to fulfilling the mission of the department – to develop lifelong learners and contributors to the orthopedic community.

At Palmetto Health-USC Orthopedic Center, our residency program for certified athletic trainers is designed to help athletic trainers expand their knowledge and diagnosis skills in musculoskeletal evaluation. We are one of six programs in the country accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE).
Our programs are designed for residents ready to further their skills in all aspects of sports medicine and to prepare them to serve in a variety of clinical, surgical, research and educational settings.
