About our practice
At USC Psychiatry, we provide innovative, evidence-based care for children and adults with an array of mental health concerns in Columbia, Lexington and across the greater Midlands of South Carolina. We are conveniently located in downtown Columbia near Prisma Health Richland Hospital, and also offer day treatment services at Prisma Health Behavioral Care’s office at 720 Gracern Rd.
We treat individuals with a diagnosed or suspected behavioral health or substance use disorder, providing high quality mental health care for individuals and families in Richland County and our surrounding communities. With our centralized location, we frequently collaborate with providers working in various community mental health centers, intensive outpatient programs and inpatient settings.
Who we are
We are a multidisciplinary team of practitioners, working closely to achieve a comprehensive treatment plan for our patients. Practicing at the intersection of the mind and body, we diagnose and treat acute and chronic mental health disorders, offering psychopharmacology and psychotherapy treatments. Our psychologists and family therapists have advanced training in how thoughts, feelings, personality and relationships influence our behavior.
We offer structured therapies, psychological testing, diagnostic consultation and medication management for a number of mental health concerns, including:
- Neurodevelopmental disorders
- Bipolar disorder (manic-depressive illness)
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder
- Trauma-related disorders
- Personality disorders
We also offer specialized therapies for our patients, such as: psychodynamic therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy skills, couple/family therapy and play therapy. Our varied parenting-focused therapeutic interventions include parent-child interaction therapy, a positive parenting program, and the Circle of Security progam.
Our day treatment program is offered for adults who face mental health difficulties or chemical dependency problems that interfere with their daily functioning. This may include:
- Inability to perform at work or school
- Feeling overwhelmed by the normal daily routine
- Having frequent thoughts of suicide
Day treatment allows for counseling that is more concentrated and structured than a routine office visit. Full- or half-day programs are offered with emphasis on diagnosis, therapy, coping skills, education, medication assessment and monitoring, coordination with community (employer or school) and referral to appropriate specialists upon discharge.
For patients experiencing a potentially life-threatening mental health crisis, we provide consultative services in a specialized behavioral care unit at Palmetto Health Richland. Our providers also care for patients admitted to inpatient behavioral care services at Palmetto Health.
